The Great British Banana

The Great British Banana is a limited-edition 16-page booklet, designed by Gabrielle Hoad, which draws on initial research material for 'Foreign Soil'. Distributed free at outlets across Wales and Southwest England, it was commissioned and printed by Nick Davies as part of his Loophole Supplements series.

Foreign Soil

In partnership with OrganicArts and West Town Farm, and in consultation with banana cultivation and climate-change experts, Foreign Soil was a documented attempt to grow edible dessert bananas outdoors in the UK.

The project was initiated in February 2012 by Gabrielle Hoad, an artist and writer based in Exeter, Devon, UK. During 2013, i-DAT contributed to the project, utilising their ecoid technology to monitor the environment on the farm.

From January 2014 to June 2015 Foreign Soil was supported by the Creative Exchange Programme, a joint initiative between the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute and Falmouth University's Research in Art, Nature and the Environment (RANE) research group.
